Indian companies which work on outsourcing model have a peculiar specialty; their employees work out of either offshore or onsite. Let me explain you this.
Indian outsourcing companies work for nonIndian companies (mostly US, japan or UK). I mean product oriented companies can give their part of work to service oriented companies (e.g. Wipro Infosys TCS Satyam etc.). Since employee of these company work for other company their employees are divided in two categories, one is onsite who are working based out of client location, other is offshore who based out of the native location.
Hmm let me make it simple, e.g. Microsoft has some work do be done (mostly some maintenance kinda work), it can outsource its work to companies like Wipro.
Now since Wipro has to co-ordinate with Microsoft to get the work done, Wipro will put some of its employees in US (Onsite) and rest of the employee will work based out of India (offshore).
In India, these companies hire huge amount of software engineers. Approximately every year they consume more that 80% of total produced engineers. Now in cities like Bangalore & Hyderabad, it’s like every second person is software engineer who work for some Indian outsourcing company
Now lets come to the point, the people who works onsite in-cash huge money, while the people who work offshore are starved. Actually the basic funda is that these companies make money only by hiring cheap labor (offshore people). So there is tough competition in offshore people to go onsite. The Onsite and offshore model itself can be criticized.
The worst thing which is about these companies is the way they send people onsite. It’s absolutely no way talent based, it’s purely based on the QUEUE model. Every one who joins the company will come in the queue of onsite waiting members, irrespective of how talented you are. This is one of the reason most of the time talented guys (not gals ;-) ) leaves the companies before availing onsite. So at any given time you will find that the person who is working onsite is absolutely dumb compared to the person who is working offshore. Consequently, Person who is dumb is getting more money than smart one.
Anyway things are getting done so these companies are still alive. But they are alive just like a bull in floor mill. Product companies always interfaced with the dumb people and hence they have an opinion of Indian companies as a company of dump people. So they only outsource the gibberish stuff to these companies.
nice article man.... :)
ReplyDeleteI don't know about big companies but small companies can't send so called "dumb" people onsite because they risk loosing business if these people in onsite don't perform. For customers onsite people are the window to offshore. So if onsite member him/herself fail then company is under huge risk of loosing business.
ReplyDeleteMy article does not say that all onsite people are dumb..In critical projects companies always sends talented people. In bigger companies, they have several stable clients, In those projects companies always sends those people who are in the ONSITE-QUEUE.
ReplyDeleteThis queue model is reposible for sending dumb people to onsite. check out my second blog at this topic.
1. What makes matters worse is the boot licking politics and the absolutely dumb ass project managers who dont know one word about software who rule the roost in india. I am just waiting for china to fire up into competition and then let us see where these indian giants find a place to hide??
ReplyDelete2. I have personally seen, when these companies send some smart fellows out onsite, it becomes quite difficult to get them back offshore. Moreover these guys also end up setting client expectations sky high which indian project managers hate to see.
Interesting writeup. Add to this the dynamics of onsite hiring by offshoring firms and it becomes really interesting; right?
ReplyDeleteFeel free to review my writeup and include in your blog.
"What makes matters worse is the boot licking politics and the absolutely dumb ass project managers who dont know one word about software who rule the roost in india"
ReplyDeleteGreat words. Since most of the qualified people have left Indian MNCs, most of the managers in them don't know how to write a proper email. In Bangalore, the Kannada pride is ruining the careers of several people.
Hi,
ReplyDeleteI worked there,Wipro(the place where every eployee has a sunflower on his ear ROFL) for 14 months. Finally I got into a real IT company a product based.Wipro is full of useless project mangers and conniving team leads(especially the women).Groupism prevails in every aspect of your work life. The top mangement is concearened only with announcing those qarter results after all every employee has a sunflower with on his ears. The only people who stick with them are the ones who couldnt get hired elsewhere(believe me the ones with so many awards to boast about and rosy appraisals were the ones who couldnt clear an interview outside....by the way I didnt need any of their awards etc to land my dream job outside). I would bet my money on infy or TCS but not wipro ever!!!!!!!!!.

ReplyDeleteOffshore outsourcing is a terrible solution for 90% of applications. The cultural divide between indian developers and requirements for american companies is huge. Add the fact that most of these offshore shops are literally pickup up people off the street to write code. I've seen just the most abysmal code coming out of these places. So sickening that american companies are allowing themselves to be had by these damned crooks.

Wipro Breaks the Law, Treats Employees badly
ReplyDeleteLack of Integrity & Breaking the Law regularly: Wipro talks all about integrity and being black and white and
no shades of gray, but continues to break the law by sending people with B1 visas to
work in the US. They
recently got barred from World Bank for giving bribes through stock and benefits.
Below Industry Pay: Their pay is substandard and treat its employees very badly, brainwashing its lower middle class to middle class employees to think that they are in a great organization and keep them oppressed. They are a body shop that pretends to be consultants, the people who joined wipro 20 years ago are now VPs and presidents among which one or two is good. It has a decent brand image in Bangalore but outside, its terrible and around the world it doesnt mean anything reflected in its stock prices. Its also a family business that is not run professionally. Imagine if you have a business and you are very stingy you would not like your employees driving good cars or doing well, that’s Premji’s attitude.
Poor working conditions: very basic, shuttled in and out in expensive bus rides to electronic city, and other parts of the city, you often spend upto 3 hours in their outsourced buses which are expensive. Its like herding cattle into a lorry , thats what they do with their uncomfortable buses. As for attitudes, they have a very authoritative attitude where they micomanage you, and police you by making sure you swipe in and out with tags, even if you are leaving for lunch within their campus, swipe cards with strings which are like dog tags. When you go on onsite engagements they pay you so little for board and food that you are more concerned with trying to eat in cheap and unhealthy mcdonald’s and make your sparse wipro budget meet than doing meaningful work for the client.
Who Stays in Wipro over the long term: No one who is good, all mediocre and below average stay. Wipro has very attrition rates and now with the recession has been treating people even worse. Anyone who is good leaves. The only exception to this rule are the extremely senior management who are getting great pay and are entrenched in the system and unmovable.
Very True...Joined wipro as a Management trainee now they are sucking my blood..all those rosy dreams are gone now the ground reality is that I am just screwing myself.
ReplyDeleteWipro is like a Leech. You will never come to know there is something stickin up ya back sucking your blood. Dirty politics ensure that once you quit wipro the employee will enever think abt comin back.
ReplyDeletewipro is one of the worst companies to work in. No growth, only politicis. They make you slog like a ox and threaten you when the market is bad. It sucks. I just put in my papers yesterday.
ReplyDeleteWipro is a complete joke, I agree, but part of the blame should also be placed upon North American/UK based customer accounts that intentionally hire Wipro for cost cutting reasons. This despite knowing that the quality of the service to be provided will be substantially lower. Everybody out in the IT field knows how shit Wipro is, it's not even an "if" or a "maybe".
ReplyDeleteFurthermore, Wipro is very poor in handling customer expectations and will say yes to any type of request or requirement, without having the skillset (or willingness to invest in its own employees to get that skillset in place). And if that leads to a business escalations or other critical issues then you'll get the usual fingerpointing political games with Wipro at the forefront.
Good luck to anybody out there who is forced to work with this joke of a company.
I also joined Wipro as a fresher 3 years ago....I was very happy with the training program as it was related to the domain I liked. So much was my enthusiasm that I topped the training in my batch. But due to bullshi* policies I was allocated to a completely different domain. Even then I slogged and performed all my given tasks well in time....what did I get in the appraisal? - "Meets Expectations" - and without any proper justification. A brain-dead maintenance project which was absolutely monotonous (full of countless 5 year old bugs which people now at TL/PM level developed)....micro management by a mothe*fu**ing PM who was a master of playing politics. My each and every day was an ordeal. Thank god that I left immediately after my bond period got over to join another company which not only paid well but also recognized my contribution and ability. Now I am happily pursuing my MBA from one of the top 5 B-schools in India and won't recommend ANYONE to join this blood-sucking company which is a fiefdom of the old bastar* Premji. Please avoid this company to secure your careers.

ReplyDeleteThe model is broken...but like most things...if that is what people think they need to do they will do whether it is the best solution or not. I find Indian people and companies systematically flawed in many ways.

Hi Guys,
ReplyDeleteI have been interviewed for some Chennai account, for South Africa location, but base location woud be Chennai, the client is Standard bank of South Africa.
Please suggest how much should i demand, or shold i join or not. my total expe is 4.6 years
Bottom line Wipro sucks as they do not treat employee's well. At onsite as well as at offshore. They are losing projects and customers to cognizant quickly. Management has a wishful thinking of increasing revenue by putting pressure on sales team. Would not work if Senior Management themselves are not good at Sales, Delivery, HR and Marketing.
